P2P File Sharing

Some of the most popular options for file sharing on the Internet are Peer-To-Peer (P2P) networks, such as Limewire, Gnutella and iMesh. To connect to a peer-to-peer network, people use software and search for shared files on the computers of other users (i.e. peers) connected to the network.

Many peer-to-peer networks are under attack by hackers seeking to exploit the people that are using their networks.

Some of the risks associated with using P2P networks include:

• Polluting attacks Inserting "bad" data and files into an otherwise valid download

• Malware & spyware Often the peer-to-peer network software itself will contain spyware
• Identity attacks Identity tracking of the users of the network to harass or attacking them
• Spamming Sending unsolicited information across the network to reduce performance
